Cover Talk: The Two Sides of The Lonely Hearts Club

This past summer while in NYC, the lovely publicists at Scholastic showed me an ARC of a January book they're very excited about. I fell in love with the cover immediately and wanted kidnap the book that very instant, but they promised they'd send me a copy when they were ready, so I refrained from any illegal activities.

Well, yesterday I got that book, The Lonely Hearts Club, in the mail, only to find that the book has gone through a cover change. I was pretty bummed (the cover was really awesome to begin with), but the more I look at the new cover, the more kick-butt it appears to me. So check it out...

The Lonely Hearts Club retro style:

The Lonely Hearts Cover, a la Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road:

So. Cool.

Granted, I don't really like the font for the new one. I think it's too swirly and girly and just doesn't really fit with the attitude-filled strut across the street, but oh well. I am very curious to see how this book plays out now because to me, this cover just says "Pick me up, I'm awesome and hilarious and smart," in a way that a Stephenie Meyer quote just doesn't, you know? I suppose I shall find out for sure soon enough as it appears that somehow it's snuck it's way to the top of my TBR list (stealthy little thing, that book is).

What do you think? Are you for the old cover, new cover or neither?

I'm going to say neither. But I'm picky, so I'll probably be the only one. They're alright, they just don't GRAB me. Bright colors are nice.

I like the first better, even though the second is clever. I think the first one is appealing in the era of too many books with people on them, and the colors make it stand out a little more.

I like the first cover better. Lately, there seems to be so many covers with people on them. I do like how the new cover shows such a variety of taste in styles, though. Flats, heels, etc.

I'm not crazy about either, but I'll pick number one over two.

However, the Meyer quote is a turnoff for me. I've picked up book after book after book with her blurb on the front and not a single one of them was a keeper for me.

I like the different styles of the four girls in the second cover, but I feel like it's trying harder to be hip than the first one. Plus, with how quickly styles change, it will seem dated pretty soon.

I like the graphic one better. It's just so cool and fun!

The new one, definitely!

I like the abbbey road cover - just remove the Stephenie Meyer blurb. Any book she likes means I wont like it or even try it!

The other cover reminds me too much of another book I haven't read and can't remember the name of but it has a brown cover with a big pink heart and swirly lines.

I think both covers are cool!
But I'm not particularly fond of Stephanie Meyer or Mayer (never remember which one is it) so for me having that quote so upfront is a turn off.

I don't know if I love either cover, but I've heard about this one and I would pick it up and read it!

I like them both, I think I like the 1st better because it's so pretty. The second is nice, but the quote kinda ruins it, not because of who made the quote, it just makes it less awesome having a big quote on the front.

Plus you know the people put it there because Meyer's so popular, and they're hoping to get Twilight fans to read it.

I'm for the first cover!

Second cover ftw!! =) I saw a bigger version of it on Elizabeth's site and it's really striking. Love it!

I guess the Steph Meyer blurb may turn off some people but it will also generate lots of sales because there are so many SM fans. Actually I am doubly excited for this book now because of SM's blurb and the new cover because it's not easy to get a blurb from SM! She's a busy women.

Oh and the second cover is actually like the cover for The Beatles's album, Abbey Road.

And there are a lot of The Beatles references in the book. Just thought I'd share with everyone. :)

Oh my goodness I LOVE the second cover! The first one is alright, but I definitely choose the second one over it.

I'll have to buy a copy of this and save it for my 11 year old. She is a HUGE Beatles fan and won't care about anything else!
