Cover Talk: Birthmarked Trilogy Gets a Facelift

One book that I really enjoyed last year (my mother did as well...I think I need to create a "TCR Mom approved" button) was Birthmarked by Caragh M. O'Brien. It's a dystopia with societal roles and conflicts, but has some scientific influences and a kick-butt code. You can read my review here.

This one has a lot of cover and title drama from the very beginning. I followed along the publisher's blog as they went through numerous titles and cover ideas, and I was thrilled when they finally came out with this one here:

Awesome, right? Here's what I wrote about it in the Cover Comments of my review: I love this cover! The gray and stormy background fits entirely with the content of the book, and I like how the girl's hair is blowing around. The colored ribbons also add just the right amount of color, and I think they hint at the scientific roots of the novel's dilemma without being too overwhelming. This cover is foreboding and intense and perfect!

So, I liked this one a LOT. However, then I saw the NEW COVER, which matched the cover of the sequel, Prized. Check them out:

Quite a difference, right? However, I LOVE them! Usually when covers change mid-series, it annoys me. But these I like a lot!

I love how the cover of Birthmarked includes the ribbon with the code on it, and the font is so awesome! And the Prized cover has some seriously cool instruments on it that I know will come into play in the story somehow, which just makes me even more curious. I also love the texture in these covers, with the rough wood on the background of Birthmarked, and the blue smoke on Prized.

Which covers do you prefer?

I love the new covers and I think the new Birthmarked cover represents the story so much better! Thanks for sharing!

I think that, over all, all the covers are lovely, plus, even with the cover switch they sort of give the same vibe!

So that's cool

I love the idea of "TCR Mom Approved" Seal, I got that for movies (I give them my mom's seal of quality, which a movie can get if she doesn't fall asleep during it!) .

I like these new covers but I agree -- it really annoys me when they change covers mid-series. I like my covers to match.

I'm in love with all of this covers. They all look so delicate. But Prized is my favorite.

I want to know if anyone knows how to re-create her code? Is there is some kind of online generator or a way to learn? I've read the specific part of the book a couple of times but haven't been able to re-create it.
