Eh. I really love the first cover. Simple and eye catching. I think the new paperback cover is a bit more generic looking. The first cover looked a lot more like a Printz finalist to me.

But like you said, I do like where they put AS King's name on the paperback. Quite clever.

I still need to read this one though!

I think that they both have elements that I like, but if I had to choose not based on having read the book and just on what I prefer on covers, I would probably pick up the second.

I can understand why so many people would be sensitive to the negative connotations of the lighter with smoking. It was my first reaction as well. However, in the book there is a case of arson that is pretty central to the main conflict, so I think that's what's referring to more than smoking.

I LIKE the new cover, don't get me wrong, but I like that the first one was more gender neutral. It's really hard to get boys to read books with girls on the cover. They automatically assume it's girly. I think the first cover attracted more boys to read it which I think has been a huge problem in YA these days. Too many girls on the covers with frilly dresses and not enough covers to win boys over.
